President Ramaphosa announced that the country will move down to level 3. We are relieved. There are millions of people who can return to work and now we can exercise anytime during the day. However, churches remain closed, and smokers may not smoke. Drinkers may drink, but only buy alcohol on certain times. Thank you, kind government! No! We must not allow ourselves to wait anxiously in front of the TV on our couches for a command council to issue orders from above. We must not be grateful that we can now walk around the block at any time. We must not find peace in the fact that government can decide which businesses are allowed to open and which not. Businesses must meet strict health regulations, but those who can comply with these measures must open. If government decides a sector must remain closed those businesses are deprived of a chance to come up with creative solutions to create a healthy environment. We are not subject to a dictatorship where a command council issues commands. We are subject to a democracy which expects citizens to actively participate. Thus, we are not obedient citizens.
Solidarity is launching a huge campaign to encourage thousands of people to sign a public declaration wherein those who are able work in a healthy way, must be enabled to work.
We must make our voice heard. Millions can work now, but there are other millions out there who are still not able to work. Millions cannot go to church and totally irrationally, millions cannot smoke.
Mobilise, together with us, thousands of people to sign the public declaration.
Visit www.solidariteit.co.za or SMS work to 34802.
We must not remain silent.
